The Scholarship Committee first met in November 2003. Joining me were Nancy (Parr) Frank, Nancy (Grey) Langguth and Lori (Vanderleest) Wenzel. Ruth (Allen) Ehler was also an active member participating by phone and e-mail. Our first meeting focused on the information that had been previously put together and discussed at the House Corporation Board Meeting held on September 14, 2002. The Scholarship Committee came together with a wealth of information and experience. We used the criteria provided to us and did some fine tuning that would make it easier to put into action. It was important to everyone that the scholarships be awarded to well-rounded students, not just high academic students, and that an application needed to be designed that allowed each applicant to tell their unique story. After all, the Zeta Delta Alpha Phi’s are a group of diverse and talented women pursuing many different careers and the scholarships should help that tradition to continue.

After the meeting I went back to the House Corporation and shared the information. With great enthusiasm and feedback, the Scholarship Committee continued to put the pieces together, communicating with the Board at each step. Gradually we put together the qualifications, criteria, application, scoring tools and plans to publicize the scholarships.

Qualifications:

  • Scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to members of the Iowa State University Chapter (Zeta Delta) of Alpha Phi Fraternity and their descendants.
  • Transcripts must show you have achieved college sophomore status or higher (as documented on an official transcript), or have been accepted into a graduate program at an accredited university or college.
  • The number of scholarships awarded is dependent upon the amount of funds available each year. A person may receive a scholarship only one time, however, if you do not receive a scholarship the first time you apply, it is recommended that you apply again.

Criteria was divided into three categories:

  • Scholarship
    • Course work under taken. (Degree Program)
    • Level of classes (100 level, 200 level)
    • Grades received.
    • Number of credits taken each term.
    • Dedication towards educational/career goals.
  • Campus/Community Involvement Criteria
    • Time spent.
    • Number of activities.

  • Essay Criteria
    • Personal and career goals.
    • Organization, activity or employment opportunity – especially meaningful.
